Fort Myers / Southwest Florida Airport (RSW)

The waiting area of the Fort Myers Airport. Seats on the right and left of a long tiled hallways heading out of security. My husband and I live in Canada where in the winter it is white and cold. It is so nice to fly out of Toronto and land in Fort Myers where it is colourful and hot. Whoever designed the FortMyers airport knew who they were catering to. As soon as you walk off the plane and into the terminal you feel like you are in Florida. You can see from the pictures the lovely windows, palm trees and colour choices that make it RSW feel so Floridian. For this review I will be focusing on quality/efficiency, food choices, shopping and washrooms.

Fort Myers / Southwest Florida International Airport knows as RSW via IATA airport code was built in 1983 and handles about 270 flights on average per day which translates into about 8.8 million passengers in 2017.  That means RSW is within the top 50 US airports by traffic.  This little airport handles lots of people with great amenities and truly gives you that “Florida” vibe.  With quick access to Interstate 75 and U.S. 41, travellers will find the airport’s location puts all the attractions of the region within easy driving distance.

Quality/Efficiency

This airport is well maintained and clean. They have put a lot of effort into the details as you can see from the shell detailing on the tiles. The staff are friendly and helpful. We have found that they are very fast getting bags off the plane and on the luggage carousel. We do not have to wait long at all. It is not a large airport with only one building. Within that building there are three concourses. Each concourse has its own security area. If you are meeting family or friends at RSW there are lots of places to sit and shop before security to help pass the time. When flying into RSW my friend and I have been known to stop at the Starbucks in the main area, have a hot drink, use the wifi and watch the planes.

Food choices

There are choices for both quick serve and sit down before you go threw security. Once you are threw security each concourse has one sit down option and at least one or more quick serve options. There are also small convenience stores that offer some pre-made sandwiches and snacks. There is not a lot of option but they are varied. I can usually find something to tied my over until I get home.

Washrooms

Traveling with a large family and people of all ages I always know where the washrooms are. Each concourse has at least two large female and male washrooms. There are also washrooms in the main areas near the security for each concourse, more downstairs in baggage claim and at the car rental. There is no shortage of clean washrooms at RSW.

Additional Information

  • There is wifi however it can be very slow
  • It is not a hub airport but if you do have a connecting flight and the gate is in a different concourse you will have to go threw security again.
  • There is a car rental centre on property. There is no need to take a shuttle. You can get your car quickly and start your vacation.
  • TSA Pre-Check is available here and highly recommended at peak times.

Lounges / Business

There are no business lounges at Fort Myers / Southwest Florida International Airport.

Overall impression

As it is not a large airport so there is a limited selection of food and shopping. However the quality and efficiency make up for that. I know that the baggage will be quick, car rental is on property and there is always somewhere to get a hot coffee.
