Green Cruising Projects & Major Vaccine Update
We have some big cruise line news to cover this week. We have been waiting to hear if the larger cruise lines will require passengers to be vaccinated and we have got updates from a few of them. There are also a couple major cruise news stories around how the cruise industry has plans to go greener and be more environmentally friendly. All that and more so be sure to check out our cruise news today.
We know there is a lot of criticism about the cruises industry and the environmental impact that it has. Recently there has been an effort to make cruising greener. This week we got an important cruise line news update from Miami, that it could be the Southeast’s first port with shore power. Five major cruise lines have signed up to be part of the plan to have port power in Miami. Carnival Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise line, Virgin Voyages and Royal Caribbean have all announced that they support the initiative. We have heard of many European ports who have announced they will be bringing shore power to follow with the EU environmental regulations.
Another big step into the future of having a more eco friendly cruise ship is development of Chantiers del L’Atlantique’s Sold sail/aeol drive which is now in the final phase of testing. This will allow for sailing propulsion on large cruise ships. The company's goal is to develop “zero emission” ships by 2050. We think this is big cruise line news today as cruising is a great way visit different countries and would want to see it have less of an environmental impact.
We knew this was going to come, our other cruise ship news has to with vaccines. MSC Cruise lines are mandating travellers be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 2 weeks before sailing. This will include crew members to ensure everyone is safe on their ships. They are not the first to announce vaccine requirements but MSC is the largest so far. Royal Caribbean has said they will mandate all crew have the vaccine, likewise Norwegian has said the same as Royal Caribbean. Carnival Cruise Line on the other hand says it's too early to decide.
We hope that you liked our video about greener cruising and a vaccine update. Do you think masks should still be required if vaccines are? Are the cruise lines doing enough to reduce their environmental impact? Are there any cruise news stories you would like us to cover?
